We believe that committing to a fall sport is a great way to not only meet new people but connect with a great team at the beginning of your school year regardless of your year in high school!
Many people have questions about the sport itself, us as coaches and the training before the season starts, so please take a minute to read the section below. Also know we are here to answer questions from you or your parents whenever they come up. Our contact information is at the bottom of this letter.
1. Do I need to have experience playing polo to join the team? No, we are here to help you learn and grow in the sport. That being said, it is helpful to be able to swim and tread water before joining the team. We have a great coaching staff that will help you with both of these skills but if you are interested in working on some of these skills before the season starts T-Hills Water Polo Club is a great place to start (http://thillswaterpolo.org/). Several of your teammates practice there and would be happy to have you join. It's not necessary, but a good idea.
2. Since Water Polo is a Club sport at Lincoln are athletes Varsity letter eligible? Yes. We have had not only Varsity letter recipients, but many All League Honors as well as State Honors handed out to our team.
3. What are the time commitment expectations? Our practices during the season are twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Our league games are Tuesdays and Thursdays with three weekend tournaments during the season for a total of between 30 and 35 games a year.
4. How competitive is the team? We consider ourselves to be very competitive. Our goal each year is to win the league championship and place highly at the State tournament. Last year the Girls placed 1st in metro league and 3rd in State and the Boys’ placed 2nd in metro league and 4th in State.
5. Are travel opportunities available? Yes. Both Varsity teams took one out of state tournament trip last year as well as traveled to places in Oregon for in-state tournaments.
6. I have heard about “pre-season” training, what is it and when? Being a fall sport, as with most other teams at Lincoln, we start conditioning and pool training before school begins. Most of our pre-season training is done two weeks before school starts and centered around the Portland metro area, we are unique as pool availability is scarce, some moving around is necessary. Also for experienced polo players and swimmers or coach invitees, we have a week long intensive training camp in Central Oregon.
7. How can I easily keep up with scheduling, events, training times and general Lincoln Polo information? The best spot to quickly gather information is our website www.lincolnpolo.blogspot.com but other good sources are via email, talking with teammates, coaches and captains.
We know there will be many other questions that arise as the school year approaches, so please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to welcoming you onto our team.
